about
An elegy on slow rotor. 85 years ago, my father’s father’s father left the harbor to make his living and didn’t come home. My grandfather was 14. 27 years to the day after he was considered lost, my mother was born. My father always told me the ocean would call to you, no matter how far you got from shore. I can’t help wondering if he meant his father’s search for an answer. My grandfather became a captain too but it was smoke, not sea, that drowned him, when my father was 27. I stare down that number on the horizon. Even now, long before December, there is far too much loss. Millions of families with holes, left not by nature but inaction, then memorialized, as if stolen not by contempt but by the tide.
